Italian Castle wedding photography training : Probably the best training course I have had the pleasure to run, this can be the only way to describe an action packed week in April at the amazing and beautiful Castello Ceconi located in northern Italy.

Castello Ceconi Italy

The castle, nestled in the foothills of the Dolomites  is owned by world renowned album manufacturers Graphistudio who have their office and factory around forty minutes away. It was as their guests that we found ourselves flying into Venice on an April Monday morning to start the workshop. ( www.graphistudio.com )

Our models for the week were Zach and Lauren who along with myself, Martin from Graphistudio’s UK office and my assistant Sophie would be staying in the castle whilst the trainees were to sleep in a nearby hotel. An action packed week lay ahead and after quickly checking into their hotel we drove the trainees upto to the Castle for welcome drinks and our first evening meal.

Meals were prepared by a local family of caterers using locally sourced products and recipes to give an authentic taste of Northern Italy and allowing us all to immerse ourselves in the surroundings and ambience ahead of our first full day of training at the Castle.

Our second day began with a short presentation from myself about off camera flash and how I use simple speed light techniques to create my wedding photographs. With our models ready we were itching to head outdoors into the sunshine  to make use of the amazing backdrops and create the first of our photographs using flash on and off camera as well as natural light.

Wednesday continued the theme of wedding photography and following a fact filled and informative presentation from Martin of Graphistudio about increasing sales and album design. Our morning shooting was all indoors using natural light, video light and flash. During my last visit to Graphistudio back in october staff had talked about a stunning potential location nearby and so after lunch we made a short drive down to the amazing canyons and mountain river. The white rock and snow melt river afforded some amazing images – thank you Chiara and Francesco!

During the evening the castle is incredibly well lit and for Wednesday evening we had arranged for the lights to be switched off allowing us an opportunity for an evening of star photography away from the light pollution of big towns and cities.  A late night saw the trainees back at their hotel just before midnight.

Thursday morning involved a trip to Graphistudio’s album factory down in the valley, the large factory is capable of producing several hundred weddings albums per day, all hand made and finished before being sent to photographers worldwide. Our tour of the factory was hosted by Martin and Francesca and we were able to view the latest products, paper types and special album prototypes first hand as well as seeing the meticulous care and attention to detail that goes into every wedding album.

The afternoon back at the castle was focused on groom preparation and bridal boudoir, with Sophie leading a Boudoir group with model Lauren, I worked with a small group on groom preparation images with Zach.  Our evening involved shooting outdoors with Zach and Lauren, again dressed as bride and groom as I demonstrated and taught how I work to create my after dark wedding photographs.

Friday dawned with clouds for the first time all week, an early pick up for the trainees allowed time to host a mock pre-wedding shoot before we wrapped up and made our way back to Venice, some to fly home and others were staying on for the weekend.

I must finish with a massive thank you to everyone who attended the workshop, models and trainees, Graphistudio for their hospitality, very kind use of the Castle and factory visit and to Martin from the UK office who as well as having the keys to the castle, ensured we didn’t run out of beer and worked just as many hours if not more than myself.

Next years workshop dates have been confirmed for May 1-5. Full details to follow…

Wedding photography training London

London Wedding Photographer Training Course – March 2016

Mid March we journeyed  down to London for our night and day wedding photography training course. The London wedding photography workshop is all about hands on photography and learning, shooting from mid afternoon until around midnight on day one before an afternoon of photography on day two.

During the two day training course we cover the use of flash on and off camera, daylight and video light including shooting into the sun, silhouettes and star bursts. During the flash element of the training course we also mad use of temperature gels to create different background effects with our models.

During the two day workshop we managed to photograph our bride and groom models around Westminster including a number of stunning silhouette images against the sunset. Above Overlooking the Houses of Parliament and below Sunset on West Minster Bridge.

Lake District wedding photography training courseLake District wedding photography workshop 2015 : Wedding Photography training course

Early October we made our annual trip to Cumbria for our two Lake District wedding photography training course.  Based in the northern lakes on the outskirts of Keswick we were ideally located for locations around Derwent Water, Buttermere, Thirlmere and Crummock Water. October is always a great month as autumn colours begin to show through and waterfalls are starting to gain strength.

Day one started with heavy rain forecast until lunchtime, this was an ideal opportunity to head over to Buttermere and work under the canopy of trees surrounding to create off camera flash images including brolly photographs. The morning was about exploring off camera flash in different locations whilst we incorporated the stunning backdrops of the mountains and fells before a brief pub lunch.

During the afternoon we headed towards Keswick to explore a number of small waterfalls, bridges and a jetty on the shores of Derwent before we finished off the day high on a cliff top with spectacular views overlooking Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water.

With a slightly better weather forecast for day two we again headed towards Buttermere using the famous Buttermere pines as a backdrop for our bride and groom photographs. The pub beckoned again for lunch before we made the steep ascent to a large waterfall and stunning mountain top location (steep ascent in our cars, most of our locations are no more than a few hundred yards from the car). Day two finished close to where we started at Thirlmere with Kelly and Mark on the beach and rocks.

During the two days we experienced, heavy rain, strong winds, bright sunshine and lots of sheep. Great fun and from the feedback afterwards a very positive learning experience for all attendees.

London wedding photography training courseJonathan White reviews the London Wedding Photography workshop in March 2015

I had previously attended a couple of workshops with Chris and on each occasion the information gained was fresh and I left the day with new techniques and ideas ready to put into practice at weddings to improve my own work. When I found out that Chris was running the two day London Workshop, although a long way to travel, I knew it would be well worth attending. I felt that it would give me further tuition and knowledge on off camera flash and lighting and being in London it would take me out of my comfort zone and give me a chance to learn the technique of posing in different locations.

On the first day, late afternoon, we met as a group of students, Chris and the model Bride and Groom, Kelly and Mark. After a brief introduction we set off to start capturing some low light images under the guidance of Chris. Throughout the evening we used multiple locations and techniques and produced some truly stunning Wedding Photographs before returning back to our hotel absolutely shattered gone midnight!

On day two we met late morning at the foot of Tower Bridge and again used unique locations throughout the day shooting in daylight. Kelly and Mark were brilliant and were prepared to try anything. At one point Mark got his feet wet in the Thames!

Throughout both days Chris ran the workshop in a controlled and patient manor. I soon realised that there was a mixed level of experience in attendance on the workshop and Chris made sure everyone understood the techniques of each shot and everyone gained from the workshop. For myself I left feeling confident that I can use all the methods taught by Chris at weddings and my work has improved because of this.

If anyone is thinking of attending one of Chris Chambers Training Workshops I would highly recommend you do so. I feel that I am always learning and looking for new ideas and techniques to make my wedding photographs stand out from the crowd and give them that ‘WOW’ factor. Attending one of Chris Chambers wedding photography workshops really helped me achieve this, my business has moved onto another level and bookings have increased.

London Wedding Photography workshop – Training Course in London

Following the sell out of our London two day wedding photography workshop in March 2016 we have added a new workshop for Thursday and Friday 17th / 18th March. Following the same format as our previous workshop we’ll be starting around Westminster refreshing and teaching some off camera flash before  looking for any potential sunset where we’ll be using both off camera flash and also create striking silhouettes against the landmarked skyline of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. During the course of the evening we aim to take in as many landmarks as possible as we head towards our final locations somewhere between St Paul’s and Tower Bridge

Day two is all about daytime photography and we’ll shoot at a number of locations around Tower Bridge before heading west towards St Pauls. During the afternoon we’ll create a number of striking bride and groom images using both natural light and flash.

It is recommended that anyone attending this workshop has a working knowledge of flash. See the workshop page here for full details and more information on the equipment required.

Hazlewood Castle training day

This is a trainee’s review and images of our Lake district Workshop, photographs and blog supplied by attendee Carol Elizabeth Photography

I was lucky enough to take some time out for a roadtrip up North to take part in a creative outdoor shooting day. The day involved using natural lighting and flash to create portraits of the couple showing the versatility of on and off camera lighting. The course was run by Chris Chambers at Hazlewood Castle and was really enjoyable! We had a beautiful bride and rather handsome groom to pose for us, and had a wonderful time walking around the castle grounds. We even had bluebells and woodlands, as well as wonderful sunshine – it was as perfect as could be!

Some of the photographs shown here are natural lighting, which is what I use for a lot of my wedding photography. I love natural light – it adds a lovely soft glow when used correctly. The creative lighting photographs in the afternoon and evening was a new style for me and we had a lot of fun creating them whilst learning the technical details required to recreate this style of photography at my own weddings. I am looking forward to using my new found skills in capturing stunning sunset portraits and using creative lighting to add some spectacular artistic images.

Lake District Wedding Photography Workshop

This is a trainee’s review and images of our Lake district Workshop, words and photographs from attendee Jan Sweeney

At the start of October 2015, I attended a two day wedding photography workshop in the Lake District, which was held by Chris Chambers. The workshop was for photographers from all over the United Kingdom, but with varying skills and levels of experience. I have only very recently stepped into the world of wedding photography so I am very keen to build upon my skills and learn from a master within this world. I have known of Chris’ work for a while and he is someone I really look up to in the industry, so there was no question that his workshop was perfect for me.

Something I want to do more of is to use off camera flash to create those magical images that make people step into a couple’s living room and say ‘WOW’ when they see one of my photographs. I am pleased to say that I had lots of opportunity to practice this skill and the results were better than I could have imagined.

Chris was extremely helpful throughout the two day workshop. He was patient and went at a very steady pace so everyone could keep up. He is obviously a regular visitor to the Lake District, as he knew the area well and took us to the most stunning locations. Chris even offered people the opportunity to shoot sunrise and star scenes alongside him.

Another invaluable lesson I learnt during the workshop was not to be afraid of any weather conditions. Throughout the two days, we had high winds, heavy rain, fog, and bright sunshine. I would feel very confident reassuring my bride and grooms now in relation to the weather, as it really does not matter! As long as you have a willing bride and groom, stunning photographs can be created whatever the weather.

As well as all the knowledge I have taken from the workshop, I met a lovely bunch of like minded people, some of whom I will keep in contact with for years to come. I don’t think you can ever stop learning when it comes to photography and workshops are one way to keep on top of this. Not only did I learn a tremendous amount from Chris, I also took a lot away from other attendees.

I am very much looking forward to putting my skills into practice with my future brides and grooms….whatever the weather!
